Boogie Monster: Top 5 Tracks

Boogie Monster’s "By no means definitive" Top 5 original & totally underplayed 90's Detroit label selections

These are the records that got buried under the weight of Detroit's more celebrated output, the kind of tracks that separate crate diggers from casual listeners. Boogie Monster's selections here span from acidic sequences on smaller imprints to electromagnetic funk from enigmatic duos, proving that the Motor City's second wave produced depths that still haven't been fully explored three decades later.

Claude Young - Acid Wash Conflict

Acidic as the title would imply, twisting and turning on its own muscular composition. Deep and linear all the way. Second release on Dan Bell's 7th City label for the great unsung hero of Detroit's second wave.

Chancellor - Insane

From Pt.2 of the various artist EP series on Jay Denham's Kalamazoo based imprint, this unique and peerless punk-out record blazes a trail of destruction in gritty sequence. Not exactly Detroit per se, but Black Nation always leave a tough mark to keep the Motor City proprietors proud.

Drexciya - Depressurization

Debut release from '92 on Shockwave (another Submerge / UR subsidiary) and the kind of stark quality you could only expect from the enigmatic duo. Curiously melancholy electromagnetic Funk sound epitomised.

Silent Phase - Air Puzzle

Stacey Pullen's first album release on Transmat in conjunction with R&S in Belgium. I could've chosen any number of tracks from this accomplished, multilayered effort but today we are going with this moody, reflective, juxtaposed wildstyle floater.

Members Of The House - Keep Pushin' Hold On

30yr secret weapon of mine finally revealed. Deep and spiritually uplifting nuanced movement in sound the way only Detroit can deliver. Praise be.

Catch Boogie Monster alongside Mike Who and Matt Ma Moustache (FR/ Frequence Paris) this Saturday, 20th December at Club 77 from 10pm til 5am. Free entry before midnight via guest list, $25 after.
