Five reasons not to miss Move D in Australia

A true icon whose deep, warm and unpredictable approach to house and techno has made him one of electronic music’s most beloved figures, David Moufang, better known as Move D, touched down in Australia last year believing it would be his final tour of the country. A string of epic parties and a rapturous reception soon changed his mind, prompting a vow to return. Lucky for us, he’s made good on that promise. With three eagerly anticipated dates next month, we’re ready for another dose of dancefloor abandon. Need convincing? Here are five reasons to clear your calendar and get moving with Move D.

01. He’s a seasoned selector with decades of experience

There’s a special thrill in catching an up-and-coming DJ having their breakthrough moment, but four decades behind the decks brings its own kind of magic. From spinning soul and disco in Mannheim to riding the wave of acid house and European rave culture, Move D has lived the history most of us have only read about. That’s a lot of house music history packed into one record bag.

02. He’s a DJ’s DJ

When the people who spend their lives playing records want to hear you play records, you’re clearly doing something right. Deetron calls Move D one of his favourite DJs, while Funk D’Void ranks him alongside greats like Laurent Garnier. His productions command similar respect: Gerd Janson counts Move D’s revered 1995 album Kunststoff among the records that shaped his taste in electronic music. Enough said.

03. His record bag is as diverse as they come

Deep house might be his calling card, but Move D is never one to stay in a single lane. Disco, acid, techno and broken beat all find their way into his sets, with unexpected detours part of the fun. Come with open ears, leave your genre checklist at the door and let a DJ with impeccable taste take you on a journey.

04. He understands the connective power of house music

For David, the people on the dance floor are just as important as the music. Reflecting on discovering the emerging acid house scene in Germany in the late ’80s, he told Club 77 last year:

“My first acid house party experiences were a revelation. I remember at one of my first club nights in Mannheim, the music was so overwhelming that I just sat in the corner digesting the scenery. Some random bloke came up to me and asked me if I was OK, that I looked a bit pale and maybe I had taken a bad pill. I told him I was fine, but the fact that a total stranger would care, I was sold on the scene from that moment.”

05. His Australian shows are rare

Sure, this is his second Australian visit in two years, but don’t get complacent. Before last year’s tour, Move D hadn’t graced our shores since 2018. That’s seven years between dances! Our advice? Make the most of it while he’s in the neighbourhood. If last year’s life-affirming gigs are anything to go by, we’re in for a serious treat.

Catch Move D headlining the Main Stage next Saturday at Carhartt WIP Presents: Keys To The City on Saturday 07 November at Fraser Park, Marrickville.
