10 albums we can’t wait to hear in 2024

The album is still alive and kicking. And if these hotly anticipated projects arriving in the first quarter of 2024 are anything to go by, it’s shaping up to be a killer year for the long player format. Expect the return of a celebrated electro duo, a new project from one of Italy’s best techno producers, and a posthumous final outing from a revered dub icon. These are just a few of the exciting LPs dropping in the coming months. Let's boogie.

Donato Dozzy: Magda (Jan 19)

The Italian techno don has returned with his first solo LP since 2019's 12H. Spanning six lengthy cuts, Magda is an aural tribute to Dozzy’s aunt and described as ‘an emotional homage to family and the Adriatic Sea’. It’s out now – go get!

Lee ''Scratch” Perry: King Perry (Feb 2)

This is a special one – Lee "Scratch" Perry's final studio album. It was written and recorded during the pandemic before the dub pioneer died in August 2021. According to Pitchfork, the album’s closing track, 'Goodbye', was apparently Perry's last-ever recorded vocal performance. While still working within the dub framework he built his reputation on, King Perry also sees the musician experimenting with synthwave, drum’n’bass, big beat, and electronica. It also includes collaborations with Tricky and Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays fame.

Justice: Hyperdrama (Apr 26)

The French electro duo - who exploded onto the scene in 2007 with their debut Cross - are expected to drop a new album this year, marking their first since 2016’s Woman. An audio clip was shared via their Instagram on January 1st, which presumably teased a new track off the forthcoming project. It sounds exactly how you’d expect – raw, brash, and with their trademark percussive beats. Will it be catchy? For sure. Will it sound exactly the same as their previous output? No doubt. It's bound to be a lot of fun, though.

Kelela: RAVE:N The Remixes (Feb 9)

American singer/songwriter Kelela is set to drop a reworked and reimagined edition of her sophomore album Raven, which dropped on the regarded Warp Records last February. Kelela has tapped a slew of heavy-hitters to remix the 20-track album, including the likes of SHYGIRL, DJ SWISHA, LSDXOXO, KYRUH, River Moon, DJ Manny and more. The LP has been described in a press release as “a transcending fusion of mashups and sounds.” Bring it.

Burial: Dreamfear (Feb 9)

Sadly, this is not a new album from Burial. In fact, the acclaimed London producer hasn’t released a full length since 2007’s ground-breaking Untrue, instead gifting fans with a fresh EP/single every year or so. But a new Burial release is always an event, so we felt compelled to include this one in our list. Titled Dreamfear, the double-sided 12-inch will arrive on XL Recordings (one of the greatest labels of all time in our opinion) on Feb 9. Much like the elusive artist himself, any further details are still shrouded in mystery.

Chromeo: Adult Contemporary (Feb 16)

The Montreal electro duo are back (soon) and ready to get all things funk-fuelled with their next LP, Adult Contemporary. A new song has already dropped ('Personal Effects') and the rest arrives on February 16. A press release for the new project reads: “Adult Contemporary is a meditation on modern, mature relationships, which means: If we gotta sing about curling irons, so be it.” Sounds like not all that much has changed for the quirky duo.

Thundercat: Apocalypse (Ten Year Anniversary Edition) (March 1)

Thundercat's second studio album was met with critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork and The Guardian when it landed in 2013. Co-produced with Brainfeeder head honcho Flying Lotus, the LP was praised as “a shimmering collection of celestial funk” that also traversed pop, soul, electronica and even prog rock. For its 10th anniversary reissue, Apocalypse has been remastered and contains two previously unreleased tracks.

The Jesus and Mary Chain: Glasgow Eyes (March 8)

Apparently shoegaze blew up on Tik Tok last year…which proves that things really are getting weirder. Perfect time, though, for one of the key bands in the genre’s development to drop a new album. The Jesus and Mary Chain will celebrate their 40th year as a band with Glasgow Eyes, their eighth album, dropping on March 8th via Fuzz Club. The first single from the album, ‘jamcod’, is out now.

Peggy Gou: I hear You (June 7)

Whatever your thoughts on Peggy Gou, it’s hard to deny the South Korean DJ/producer’s sheer star power. In the last two years Gou's catchy productions have seen her crossover from the underground and into the mainstream. Her 2023 single, ‘It Goes Like (Nanana)’, was the first taste of Peggy’s upcoming debut album – a nostalgia drenched affair harking back to the house-pop sound of the late 90s/early 00s. We can no doubt expect more of the same when her album arrives on XL Recordings sometime this year.

FKA twigs (TBA)

While discussing her still-to-be-announced new album on Discord last week, FKA twigs mentioned she had fallen "in love with techno" while living in Prague a couple of summers ago. "The album isn't techno but the spirit is there," the UK producer wrote at the time. Colour us intrigued.
