Bang Gang’s Dangerous Dan on Daft Punk, celebrating AJAX and being a naughtie kid.
Back in the 2000s, when the lines between the pop world and underground house were delightfully blurred, Sydney club land was dominated by an outfit known as the Bang Gang Deejays. A rag-tag collective of six selectors led by the inimitable AJAX (who sadly passed away in 2013), Bang Gang rocked Sydney venues with their high-octane DJ sets that mashed up sleazy electro-house, nu-rave and hipster indie.
Launching the notorious Friday nighter ‘Bang Gang’ at Moulin Rouge in Kings Cross, the riotous party later moved to Club 77 where it became a weekly staple of the city’s nightlife and a clubbing institution so famed it would give rise to Bang Gang global tours, mix CDs and dance music infamy.
Countless wild nights, destroyed dance floors and sun orbits later, Bang Gang are still active in the club world in some form or another. Their upcoming party, however, marks the first time in a long time that the whole crew - Jaime Doom, Dangerous Dan, Gus da Hoodrat, DJ Damage and Double Nolan - will all play together (except for Ajax, of course). It’s also their first time back on the 77 decks in a decade.
In anticipation of the impending party, we touch base with Dan Single, aka Dangerous Dan of ksubi fame, who lets fly on French robot inspirations, releasing a biography and getting the gang back together.
Hi Dan. So tell us, what inspired this upcoming Bang Gang reunion?
We are always looking for an excuse to play music and celebrate AJAX, but with Gus in London and Beni in Mexico City it’s been hard to get everyone in the same town at the same time. This particular time we’re all here. I am making a book of all the things (some of the things) I saw in the noughties. It’s called Diary Of A Naughtie Kid and was kind of the conversation starter for the party.
It’s also the first time in a decade Bang Gang will play Club 77. How does it feel to be returning home?
Fuck me, has it been that long? Wowza, it feels like time goes too fast for my liking, that’s what it feels like.
Do you have any lasting memories of the club from your residency days?
AJAX.

Back in the day, Bang Gang were renowned for a riotous sound that eschewed genre boundaries. Where do you notice your legacy in today’s landscape? Are there any DJs, producers, parties or scenes where you recognise a similar spirit?
I’m seeing it pop up again now and that’s exciting - it was a lil’ dull for a while. For me, Loren’s Rhonda party in L.A. carries the early Bang Gang spirit of a no rules / trust the DJ music policy and a curious and sexually charged dancefloor. And funnily enough, Burning Man too. I don’t know what it is, but many times I’ve been out there on that big dusty dance floor and thought “Mmmm, I feel like I’m back at The Bang Gang.” Which is weird because you're actually outdoors in the desert.
What can we expect sonically for the upcoming party?
MAGIC, old and new.
You were on Daft Punk's Australian tour in 2007, who were a big influence on you. What did you think of Random Access Memories?
They’re my biggest influence. Daft Punk was why I started listening to electronic music. I have loved everything they have done, musically, conceptually, all of it. They are the greatest of all time. Random Access Memories in particular? Love it, but Homework is still my favourite album.

Looking back on the history of Bang Gang, what are you most proud of?
That we were all inclusive and kind to everyone, inspired a lot of people, made great memories and had a hell of a lot of fun doing it.
If you could go back in time and gift the Dan Single of 2007 some advice and wisdom, what would it be?
Mmm, hahaha, I would say… Live your life with a pure heart and good intentions. Experience all the experiences you can. Don’t force things, you are not in control. Be good to people. Live life to the max. Enjoy every moment. You gotta have the rain to get the rainbow. It’s OK to be sad, feel all the feelings. Never give up.
Which word best describes each of your fellow Bang Gang members?
Naughty.

Can you share a non-Bang Gang DJ mix that best sums up Bang Gang?
Oh man, so many. If I had to pick one it would be The Thomas and Guy Man Wedding Crashers Mix. It’s three hours of Daft Punk playing rock, techno and wedding classics recorded live from a villa in Ibiza in early 2000s. It’s bonkers and crazy exciting like the Bang Gang was.
Not many people have that one though, so maybe also, 2ManyDJs - As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt 1.
