“Less ego, more talent”: Karen Nyame KG on the music industry, playing Glastonbury and why Honey Dijon is an inspiration

British DJ, producer and radio host Karen Nyame KG has been commanding dance floors since 2018 with her signature fusion of African polyrhythms, low-end sub-basses and energetic drum patterns.

Fresh from international festival stages and a run of standout releases, the self-styled ‘Goddess of Rhythm’ is back in Australia for a whirlwind one-week tour, including sets at Strawberry Fields and our very own little disco den this Friday night.

In our rapid-fire chat, Karen reflects on the magic of Glastonbury, the grind behind her success, and why the industry needs less ego, more talent, and stronger pathways for electronic artists to build lasting careers.

Hi Karen. You’re back in Australia! What is something you’re excited to tick off your list?

The last time I was here on tour, I went on a mini adventure with some friends. We explored the Royal Botanic Garden in Sydney, which was visually stunning, then went on a hike afterwards. Unfortunately, I won’t have the time to do this on this leg of the tour, but I’m hoping to get some beach time. Perhaps in Melbourne?!

What did you learn from your experience of collaborating with Melé on ‘Beat Up The Drum’?

Melé is a production wizard, radiating effortless energy in the studio. I was immediately inspired, so it didn’t take me long to write the record – we were vibing so much that we essentially cut it there and then!

What is something the music industry could use more of? And less of?

It would be beneficial to establish more sustainable sources of income for performing artists, musicians, and writers. Currently there is limited equity beyond live performances, which have become even more challenging to secure in the post-pandemic landscape. This situation makes it difficult for artists to build their careers and reinvest in their art forms. Additionally, it would be refreshing to see talent evaluated based on merit rather than perceived success, which can be easily fabricated these days. We need less focus on clout and ego, and more emphasis on genuine talent.

You’ve had the honour of playing Glastonbury several times, however your 2023 set made a significant impression. What is your lasting memory of that gig?

It was definitely a sensory experience. Glasto is its own universe! The gig was a lot of fun and the weather was lush too. I'm not much of a camper, but I reckon I’ll bite the bullet next time and go all in.

What’s been the funniest thing that’s happened to you on tour or at a festival?

Nearly fell off a buggy during one of my festival bookings this year – it was the adrenaline rush I didn’t know I needed. The ground was quite rough, so the drive to my stage was genuinely an experience haha! The phone footage alone is hilarious.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I tend to overthink my career, as many creatives do. Self-criticism can sometimes feel like a mental weapon. A good friend of mine reminded me that my purpose extends beyond myself, and that my impact, though only a drop in the ocean, is a mark in history. I must keep documenting, archiving, and celebrating my progress and process as a reflection of my contributions to electronic music. He reminded me that my life's work, is monumental; my gifts are magical. That message really hit home for me.

What’s been your most memorable interaction with a fan?

I have many! Some of my supporters literally follow me from city to city. I had one supporter lift their phone up while I was performing and it had the words ‘BIG KG’ scrolling across the screen, then they blew me a kiss. It was such a sweet moment.

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?

Oh my goodness, I have cleaned office toilets, worked in security standing on my feet all day, worked night shifts, day shifts, you name it. Sorted mail for 12 hours in cold warehouses…I could go on. My CV is literally five pages long! I have truly earned my stripes. Those used to be the worst working days of my life.

Who is someone that continues to inspire you and why?

I have many inspirations and muses, both in and out of music. Honey Dijon and Carista were key references for me while I was learning how to DJ. I am truly enamoured by their style, stage presence, musical knowledge and technical skill in their sets. I've been fortunate enough to share stages with them, which have been full-circle moments for me. Another big inspiration for me is bell hooks, a brilliant mastermind and theorist. I appreciate her insights on race, feminism, and class. I love reading her books.

What’s your number one guilty pleasure?

Haribo sweets – I really can’t get enough. Those that know me KNOW lol.

The last book you read?

The Spirit of Intimacy [by Sobonfu Somé]

Do you have a party trick?

I can flair my nostrils at rapid speed.

What’s an album you always return to?

I really love Teedra Moses's album 'Complex Simplicity' – it's one of my favourite sultry R&B projects. R&B, interestingly enough, inspires much of my Afro, Electronic, Dance-focused work.

Favourite film you watched this year? And the TV show you’re currently obsessed with?

I actually haven’t watched a film this year yet, wowzers. However, I’ve seen two shows: one documentary that took my breath away on Netflix – ‘The Perfect Neighbour’ — and another on the lighter side, ‘Katsaye’s Pop Star Academy.’ Currently obsessed with ‘Married At First Sight’ also!

Is there a track you haven’t been able to stop listening to lately?

Freddy da Stupid’s -  ‘Eargasm’ – it's a liquid 3-step/ Afro House track (look into it, its so gorgeous) He is a Mozambican DJ and music producer who I am currently hooked on at the moment!

If you could go back and give that younger version of yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?

That your dreams are valid, and that you have the power to manifest what you truly desire – it's all within. Don’t let other people reduce you to their own limitations. You are beyond.

The song or track you wish you had written?

Atjazz, Jullian Gomes, Bucie – ‘Out of My Life’. It’s such a dark, techy, soulful house banger. Timeless.

What’s the best thing about living in London? And where in North London is the best place for a cheap and delicious meal?

Best thing about London is the community, the multicultural melting pot of sounds and cultures intertwined into one – innovation. I couldn't think of a better creative springboard, to be honest. Best place for a cheeky meal, mmmm – it isn’t cheap but you won’t regret it; the food is amazing. Check out ‘Tamila’ in Kings Cross – great South Indian cuisine. Wear loose clothing haha!

The non-music podcast you’re addicted to?

I love all things Paul Brunson ‘We Need To Talk’. He humanises his guests in a way that makes his conversations engaging and educational – it’s like therapy! I love Shan Boodram’s ‘Lovers by Shan’, all about the intimate lives and life lessons of others.

What would you like to have accomplished in the next five years?

I aim to have written and produced multiple hits for myself and others. Yes, I need and want those music awards! I am very ambitious. I do aim to secure at least one film/TV sync deal and have one of my compositions licensed for something big. I hope to build and own my own studio complex one day, somewhere scenic. I hope to find love - get me off the streets please! I also hope to still have great skin and be healthy enough to enjoy the fruits of my labour!
